Xtream Codes or M3U: what they are and which to use
What an M3U playlist is
M3U is a plain-text playlist format. Each entry includes the name of an item, optional data such as its logo or group, and the address of the video stream. The version with extended tags is known as M3U Plus.
You do not usually receive the file itself, but a link that generates it with your credentials included. The app downloads that text and builds the list from it.
What Xtream Codes is
Xtream Codes is an application programming interface (API) used by many IPTV servers. Instead of downloading a text list, the app connects to the server with your username and password and requests the information in parts: categories, live channels, programme guide and on-demand catalogue.
That is why compatible apps show content in a more organised way and can update it without downloading everything again.
Comparison
| — | Xtream Codes | M3U |
|---|---|---|
| What you enter | Username, password and server URL | One long link |
| Ease with a remote | High: short details | Low: you type a long URL |
| Programme guide | Loads automatically | Sometimes needs a separate EPG link |
| On-demand content | Split into categories | Mixed into the list or unavailable |
| Compatibility | Apps that support the API | Almost any player |
| Updates | On demand, in parts | The whole list is downloaded again |
When to use each one
- Xtream Codes: on Smart TVs, Fire TV Stick and Android TV, when the app supports it and you want the guide and catalogue well organised.
- M3U: in players that only accept playlists, on computers with general-purpose video players, or to quickly test whether a device plays smoothly.
- If one option gives you trouble in your app, try the other: the content is the same.
Look after your login details
Both the M3U link and the Xtream Codes details contain your username and password. Treat them like any other credential: do not post or share them, and keep them somewhere safe.
Common problems
- The playlist will not load: check that the server URL includes the protocol (http:// or https://) and the port, if there is one.
- Authentication error: check upper and lower case in the username and password.
- The guide is empty: wait a few minutes or force an EPG refresh from the app's settings.
